Tough week. Long week. It's not getting easier.
About the photo.
First of all, it's not new work, the frame was taken about a year ago, maybe even more. It was my first time trying my (then) new SB600 flash. I was never swept away by the 'flash lovers'/ Strobists people, although I do love the result it brings.
I don't know, it just always feels like a totally different photography world, and I almost fear my ignorance of this world. And I'm too lazy to go around with another photo gadget in my bag. I'm sure I'm missing a lot by ignoring flash... *sigh*.
The structure of the frame above, the triptych, is not something I use often. Actually,I think this is the only photo I ever used it in. I must confess - I'm not sure about it.
'A picture is worth a thousand words' is something STRONGLY I believe in. If you failed to tell a story in one shot(="thousand words"), why would three of them will be better? Or two? Or four?
I really think that three frames in the photo above, each one of them can be a pretty good photo, so why use such structure? It's another issue for paintings, but lets stick to photography.
Please share you triptych/flash photo in the comments section! :)
This week I'm interviewed on SlashMaraud blog (by @tntd) AND featured on "The Weekly Bzzzzz" by @rtd13 so please, hop in and check it out.

I really like it! I understand what you're saying about capturing the whole story in one frame, but I think this one just works. Good stuff.
Paul Johnston-Knight says:
Love it Ilan - great feeling of love & candid capture about it, in spite of the obvious need for some artificial lighting.
I can understand what you say about the Triptych - I think I've only ever puplished 1 triptych of my photographs, and I'm still not totally sure about it.
Like yours it's some older work - from Apr 2007 and I think if I had time I'd re-frame it somehow, anyway, here it is ...

wow ilan! i do like this set, such a romantic mood created by them as well as by you, the photographer. =D
Ken says:
I use the the Triptych in various ways. In an upcoming posting ( July 5th), I used the outer two pictures to establish setting ( Union station, Chicago) and to curve the eye to the center with line structure and then the middle picture was the focus of the entire three images. Alone i do not think it would have worked.
I have also done the Triptych collages to show passages of time. I think it is up to the photographer, I try to keep an open mind and never discount any arrangement or post processing until I have viewed it.
Fritsch says:
Good to see you're back after a long & tough week, Ilan. And you're right: Everyone of them is great picture. I look at this one as a kind of prose wether a single picture could be a poem. A poem worth a thousand words. So thanks for telling this story, thanks for writing it down. Blessed are the storyteller. Great work, Ilan!
All the best & safe travels, Fritsch.

Love story... Lovely images.
Phototherapy says:
You are telling a story here, step by step. One image cannot do that.
From left to right, the action seems to be reversed. I suppose you did it at purpose... What I like the most is the zoom effect between them. One image cannot do that...
Action, time and place unity (like in theater) are there, creating consistency between the images (very important).
It's a good work, buddy :)
A detail, but I would enlarge the tiny separation between them, to balance with the large border, and maybe choose a DCDCDC instead of FFFFF as background :)
Generally speaking about series or polyptych, you can go in more détail into your subject, really turn around it, developp. It's different than building one frame. I would say it's complementary: you capture sometimes images to stand alone, and other images to be combined...
About sharing, two polyptych, quite differents :

and

About flash, the light is obviously too hard (image 1 & 2), as always in direct.
The only practical way I found with flash is to use a "Lightsphere Universal Cloud" from http://store.garyfonginc.com/
or arrange some indirect ways of lightning...

Hey Ilan
Nice pics
I see you are getting closer and closer to start using Flash more often. It's a great tool if you use it right. Beware - it's addictive stuff! all the best - Tomer

I think you've done a great job of capturing this summer love story. I wonder if it lasted beyond September?
bluechameleon says:
I always felt that 3 images told a lovely story...this is perfect Ilan! The flash creates such an incredible mood with the vignetting that surround the couple...captivating images.
For the record, I've always been afraid to use a flash, now you have got me curious :)

The beginning is nice ! Always ! Expect to follow...
Soe says:
Great story telling, Ilan... may be in 3000 words.. but still, great!
:)
z-vet says:
I think in this case one photo is not enough. Three fit perfect and make «the story» more complete.
Flash is an interesting thing to learn and use, i do it right now and have a great time playing with it. Take a look at this photo for example: i will fail to capture it without a flash.
Regards.
PixeLuz says:
Sometimes, life looks like a movie. Maybe this is when we recognize some familiar storyboard. That's probably why the triptych structure works so easily here.
Hope, Ilan, it's getting easier for you.
c o n f l a g r a t i o says:
I like just the sequence of frames, tell us all we need to know. Nice job.
Pied Crow says:
I completely agree with you about the scariness of using a flash! Keep sharing your efforts, maybe I'll take the plunge.
Re: Triptych, I've never tried it myself. I do think it makes it more difficult to really see each photo and look for the relationships between the people, objects, light in the photo. This trio is very narrative, but the narrative is not an unusual one...so maybe the images would be better served by being seen one by one???
Andy says:
Really cool series that tells a story.
Luis A. De Jesus R. says:
I felt the same way about flash at first. I purchased my SB600 in 2007; just felt it was time to, and now it's used a lot more than not.
I see the point of your rhetorical question. I see each photo in a triptychs as a chapter. Even these take skill to put together to tell the whole story effectively and you succeeded. Nice work.
Kamal says:
darn. i have no triptych pics to share. great usage of triptych in this one. well, some pictures are meant to be told in a series. that's what i think. superb!
Giovanni says:
Wow, Ilan this is a lovely and romantic triptych!! Great use of light! Love it!
Ricardo says:
Beautiful story and beautiful pictures.
CraigM says:
I don't think I've ever used this method but what/who's to say it's wrong? The three images tell a story that one could not and I don't think you should concern yourself as to whether it conforms or not :) It must have appealed to you in some way and that's enough. Funny because I've just written a little about this in tonight's post.
Anyway I like them, all of them and the story they tell. Catch you soon :)
Ash says:
Interesting!
Thanks for visiting me...
nk says:
lot of complicity between them, you captured it very nicely. A complete story in 3 pictures! Will we have the morning after triptych?

SD (Aspherical) says:
I don't do triptychs, mostly because I prefer to just present single images of the same (or similar) items in a series of individual prints.
In this case, I don't think the triptych format is justified. Any one of the images says the same thing - these two are in love. The third adds a bit, as the sand gives a setting. However, for the triptych treatment, I'd prefer a twist in the story (e.g. in the first panel, the couple is arguing, the second they make up, and in the third they're walking back to the house together).
joshi daniel says:
that is a good story!
Pere Chuliá says:
Bonita secuencia. Me gusta su colorido e iluminación, así como el dinamismo que destila. Parece una secuencia sacada de una película. Un saludo.
Ivar says:
It tells a nice story.. nice pictures, albeti a bit hard light due to the flash.. Well done
Angela Smith Photography says:
Great emotion in this!
yz says:
cool series, love the 'polaroid' kind of feeling
Darietto says:
I'm agree with Phototherapy. One capture can tell a message but sometime you need more than a message to tell! You need a whole world to explain, and...it depends on the situations... a single shot can't do that. So, here you have two beautiful people who loves eachothers in a wonderful way. You found them and through your camera (like a movie) you told us a story. Great work!
Rajesh says:
A picture is thousand words worth. Three pictures in a row definitely tell a beautiful story.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts (and criticism) of the triptych in photography. This certainly stands out as different from most of your work (the flash and presentation) but it also has your great sense of capturing something that feels authentic.
Thank you for taking the time to comment my photo - it is much appreciated :)
